I don't know if word has gotten out much, but this weekend we lost a unique and talented person. Brian Russell, known in the SCA as Ciaran clan Ferte (although I probably spelled that wrong) is no longer with us. He died this weekend at Coronation.
My condolences go out to his helpmeet, Guiliana.
Many people don't know how talented Ciaran really was. Not only was he very active in the herald's department, but he was a talented musician. He had been doing some wonderful work in getting together information about medieval/renaissance music in a database that would have benefitted us all. He will definitely be missed. |

| We seem to be having bad luck with cats here |
[Aug. 26th, 2007|02:22 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | worried | ] | Last night, around the time he was supposed to come upstairs for dinner, Ramses II decided that he wanted to chase a cat which was outside. He apparently put all his weight on the screen and popped the whole thing out, taking off into the night. (I visualize him standing on his hind legs like a meercat, which he tended to do when there was a cat outside the window, and then striking the screen like a mongoose going after a cobra.)
Sally and I have both been outside several times walking around the house and neighborhood hoping to spot him, but it's a no go so far. Today, after I took posters around to the various neighbors, I did a tour of the local 24 hour vet hospital and the Humane Society. We also picked up some live traps in the hopes that even if he was too scared to come to the door when it opens, that he'd go into one of the traps to get dinner. (Of course, we'll probably trap several of the other neighborhood strays in the process. We'll have to wait and see.)
Needless to say, I'm devastated. He's my baby. He's the soft cuddly boy who loves being petted by me (as opposed to the others who are more independant.) I'm at the point where I don't know what to do next.
One good thing is that the coyotes haven't been baying this summer, so hopefully they've moved out of the area. And we didn't find him as road pizza. (Hopefully he didn't cross our busy street but went into the brushy area behind the house.) |

| Love Chocolate? |
[Apr. 14th, 2007|10:54 am] |
If you love chocolate, you may want to go to this website and read about what some of the companies want to do with chocolate: basically remove the chocolate and substitute vegetable oils.

While I'm one of the allergic people, I know people who would be harmed by this because they're allergic to what the substitutes would be. |

| What Kat does when she's not doing SCA things: The Sims 2 |
[Jan. 30th, 2007|11:30 pm] |
I thought youall might be interested in seeing the kinds of things I do when I'm not doing SCA/historic costuming things.
I'm just starting to learn how to do "object creation" and I've started sharing the "houses" I've love building. Mostly I play the game, but since I'm one of their official moderators (called SimMasters), I end up also having to let people know they are in trouble or how to fix their computer or how to make the game work the way they want.
But as I said, I'm just beginning to share my Sim "houses." Here's where you can see my most recent one: http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=491808
If you are interested, there are pictures which can be found by clicking the little "camera" icon. It has 3 big montages.
Here's a photo of one that might interest people I know. I've made Sim people who look like me and Grendal. You can see them in this picture:

This is an activity that I have a lot of fun. And I've made a lot of friends. (It's a really good idea to have friends with diverse interests. Everyone has multiple aspects to their interests and it would be unfair to expect your friends to have the same subset of possible interests.) |

[Jan. 16th, 2007|01:20 pm] |
My apologies to all the people who have friended me and didn't get the return. I hadn't been to my friends file in a long time and several people who had friended me, hadn't been seen (yet).
Well, youall are added.
However, you didn't miss much as until recently I'd had problems with posting. I could post replies in other people's journals, but my browser would crash to desktop every single time I tried to post an entry to my own! Fortunately, the problem got straightened around and I can now post. |

Instructions: Go http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3. Choose five random quotes that you like or feel represent you in some way.
The really potent part of love is that it allows you to carry around beliefs about yourself that make you feel special, desirable, precious, innately good. Your lover couldn't have seen [these qualities] in you, even temporarily, if they weren't part of your essential being. Martha Beck, O Magazine, February 2003
One path alone leads to a life of peace: The path of virtue. Juvenal (55 AD - 127 AD)
Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip. Will Rogers (1879 - 1935)
A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again. Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744), An essay on Criticism
All interest in disease and death is only another expression of interest in life. Thomas Mann (1875 - 1955) |

| Celtic Horoscope, thanks to renartthefox |
[Aug. 7th, 2006|05:57 pm] |
| You Are A Rowan Tree | You are full of charm and cheer. You light up a room. And while you crave attention, you do it without ego. You are an interesting mix of contradictions - and very unpredictable. You are both dependent and independent, calm and restless. You are passionate, emotional, gregarious, and (at times) unforgiving. |
This was so cool. I *love* Rowan trees. (I have 2 Rowan/pear-cross trees that I planted hoping to get fruit. (They've been there since 1993 and *still* no fruit. Sigh.) |

You Should Rule Saturn
|

Saturn is a mysterious planet that can rarely be seen with the naked eye.
You are perfect to rule Saturn because like its rings, you don't always follow the rules of nature.
And like Saturn, to really be able to understand you, someone delve beyond your appearance.
You are not an easy person to befriend. However, once you enter a friendship, you'll be a friend for life.
You think slowly but deeply. You only gain great understanding after a situation has past.

[Jul. 9th, 2006|10:26 am] |
A friend of mine, Impkitti, asked (in email)if she could "friend" me here. I want to hear from my friends! Of course I said yes. But when I went looking for her here, it said that she hadn't registered. Bummer.
Well, maybe I'll find her screenname later. |

| Friends |
[Jul. 6th, 2006|11:03 pm] |
I'm used to making friends using screennames. But those are usually people I've never met in real life and would probably never meet in real life.
However, the use of screennames here is making it tough for me. I can't always tell who someone is and my security risks make it hard for me to just put someone on my list unless I'm sure who they are in real life.
I can just see it now: my awful ex finding me here. Ick, ick, ick.
So, if you are one of my friends in real life and you want me to find you, then it would be helpful if you would tell me who on earth you are (privately, by email, whatever is most comfortable to you.) ;-) |
